591: My Cockpit Rev #17 – Parking Brake T-Handle

Over the last few months, I’ve been looking for a proper T-shade handle to replace the unattractive pull button handle on my parking brake.  Among the last three candidates I chose, the nylon one on the right is the final winner.

However, as the screw size of it is an M-6 and the shaft of the parking brake is an M-4, I have to additionally source an M-4 brass knurled nut to insert into the hole of it so that the handle could be coupled with the shaft tightly.

Total cost of the components (4 sets — $3.96) isn’t a lot:

  • Flat head screw head  = $0.22 x 4 = $0.88
  • Brass knurled nuts = $0.01 x 4 = $0.04
  • Nylon T-shaped handle = $0.36 x 4 = $1.44
  • Bakelite T-handle = $0.40 x 4 = $1.6

Even with the shipping included, the whole project is just about $8.0.  But it took nearly two days with many experiments and failures and dremel works to put them together properly at last.

Of course I am quite happy with what it performs now.

Hm…I think I should alter the face-plate from the current light brown color to dark brown or even black so as to better match with the tone of my other gears.  Yes, I will do it in the next few days.   Edit: Just made the change (in the next morning).  It looks much better and I really should have done this earlier.
