394: My Newest nVidia Settings

A friend who asked me what my nVidia 3D Settings were for P3D.   I told him that I simply used the default values coming with the driver in the last few years.

In response to his question, I re-examined and tested the impact of each value to my system last week.   Here’s the settings I am satisfied with:

339: P3Dv3.2 First Impression

Installed the new Prepar3D version 3.2 last night and played with it for a few hours under the same settings (including third-party addons and peripheral hardware) as in the last version.   P3Dv32_01

Surely it’s impossible to “experience” all the new features that come with the new version in such a short time, but two features that mentioned in the version’s release announcement could be confirmed right away. Continue reading

News: Prepar3D Version 3.2 Available Now

Lockheed Martin just released the latest version 3.2 of Prepar3D.

The company says that the new update brings several new features and numerous platform, rendering, SimDirector, SDK, SimConnect, and multiplayer updates – including increased performance for multiple views and touch gesture support.

Sounds exciting!   Go get your download if you haven’t done so.

EDIT NOTE:
I normally create an image copy before major update like this just to play safe.   You’re recommended to do the same.

324: Make Your Aircraft Invisible

It’s still true that I mainly flightsim in one of the following cockpit views reported in my Post 181.

1. Landing/Takeoff — showing the hood from the pilot seat on the left
2. Cruising — showing outside scenery only
3. Normal Cockpit — used only when FIPs are turned off

To implement the Cruising View, in particular, I used to disable the 2D-Cockpit in the camera.cfg first, and then create a specific CameraDefinition for it.    Recently, I found Prepar3D has a hidden feature which makes this customization process totally unnecessary as shown in the video below:

Two steps only are required: Continue reading

News: Prepar3D v2.5 Released

Didn’t notice that version 2.5 of Prepar3D was released a couple of days ago.    I can’t help to download it immediately since it has interrupted my computer system maintenance process being worked on, and even though I am still busy preparing the coming Chinese New Year.

Anyway, the good news is the new version 2.5 has come with a lot of improvements, fixes and requested enhancements, as Lockheed Martin says.  Just a note if you are not aware of the new release like I did.

BTW, as mentioned in the previous post, requests for free gauges and other downloads will be ignored in these few weeks until my main computer and server are up and running again.

243: Lost and Found

Switching to P3D could also mean losing many handy features added to FSX previously.  FSDiscover is definitely one of them.  Until Flight1 launches a P3D compatible version, command TOGGLE_AIRPORT_NAME_DISPLAY is my temporary measure when I am lost in the sky.

Just open the Standard.XML file inside the Controls folder where Prepar3D.cfg is located.   Then add the command to any key or key combination and save it.   That’s all.   Names of airports around current location will be shown when the key or key combination is pressed.

Misc: Computer Broken Down Update #2

It’s really a mixed feeling if you ask me whether I like the new Windows 8.   Certainly it excels in many ways than Windows 7 but I did spend a lot of time to adapt to the new interface and operation flow.   Over the last few days,  I have reinstalled the OS three times so as to get the system setting up in the way that I want it to be, including minimizing non-flight simulation related software, composing backup and storage structures that best fit current and future needs, etc.

Now, I am at the crossroad wondering which direction to go.

The just launched P3D version 2 seems to to be quite promising and full of potential.  However, I’ve been using FSX for nearly a decade and all my set up, both hardware and software, was built around it.

Does it worth the effort to start over from scratch again?   I am bewitched, bothered and bewildered…
