643: My Cockpit Rev #23 – My New Rig

It’s almost four years since I purchased my last computer for flight simulation.  It’s still working good.  However, it’s commonly agreed that hardware for flight simulation is just like the song in the “The Greatest Showman” movie – Never Enough.

Cannot say it’s the best timing to upgrade but since my work computer (nearly 10 years old) acted a bit odd lately, I decided to substitute it with my current flight computer and purchase a new one for flight simulation.

The specs are:

Motherboard: Asus Maximus XII APEX (z490 chipset)
CPU: Intel i9 10900K
Memory: 64GB HyperX Fury 3200MHz
Graphics Card: Asus TUF Gaming RTX3090
Power Supply: Seasonic Prime Platinum 1000W
CPU Cooler: ThermaltakeFloe DX360
Case: Be Quiet Pure Base 500DX

Straight out from the box, FPS is stable at 30 in MSFS 2020 (even in City) with ultra settings on my 65-inch 4K TV, compared to my 1080Ti delivering a fluctuated 20-30 FPS under High settings.

The number should go up a bit more when the rig is further tuned.

Surely it’s still not on the top top range but it should be good for flight simulation in another 4, 5 years I guess, although it’s never enough.

    1. Thanks Karsten.
Yes, it is on the top range but really there are still stuffs above and more expensive than what I have. Surely am quite happy with it so far.

Nice looking rig. I am doing the same but I am going with the 10850k vice the 10900k. How many usb 2 ports are on the Apex motherboard? I am considering the hero version, but I have not decided yet.

Couple questions for you, your list shows a 100 watt ps I assume it’s a 1000? I think it’s a bit over kill but again you can never have enough power… also I have been running 32g of memory for a long time and have never came close to maxing it out. Why did you decide to go with 64. Was it the same thought as the PS? More is never a problem but less could be?

    Thanks for the post

    Happy holidays to you

    1. Hi Tom,
I thought about the 10850k as well as it is newer and the difference is small. Just go with the 10900K as the new one is out of stock at the time I placed my order.
Same reason to the Apex board versus Hero. If not, I would go to 10850K (maybe 10900K) on the Hero.
The Hero has more features in specs than the Apex, which reflects in its price that is a little bit higher too. Other than that, both boards performs similarly.
There are no more usb 2 ports on Apex. Same to Hero if I remember correctly.
Yes, 1000W on the PS. Corrected in the post. Due to the 3090 card, I would use one with more power even though an 850W PS would be enough in theory.
For PS, I always go for higher than required.
For memory, I go to 64G because the price difference is not much and I was thinking to use some of the capacity for ramdisk, which should help speeding up program startup time, etc. Yet haven’t tried it.

      1. Understand completely Tom. Thanks for the feedback. Are you having any issues with your FIP’s on USB3. I know you are running them through a USB2 hub, which I know works, but I am concerned about new motherboards, basically, I am always concerned with change.

      2. Haven’t set them up yet. There were some issues in the past although the FIPs could be run. Not sure if the new Win 10 fixes that issue or not.
In the worst scenario, could still add a USB 2.0 hub in between.

  2. Nice one Tom

I’m also on a 3 yearly upgrade path and managed to squeeze in an Nvidia RTX Zotac RTX3090 24GB card too just last week, have been building up to this for a couple of months now, been buying new parts in preparation for this but chose to go for AMD for my CPU this time, indeed been waiting for my pre-order of an AMD 5950X since day one launch in UK, my supplier tells me very soon, but reading between the lines, it will be this month or 7th Dec at the latest.

Also have went up to 64 GB of good tight timing 3600Mhz ram that is possibly good for 3800MHz, motherboard is an MSI X570 Tomahawk, its mostly well reviewed, but now I’ve tested it with a second hand AMD AM4 2600 CPU for a dress rehearsal … it does leave me thinking I need more from a motherboard, but maybe not, this motherboard does most things really well, lots of spare USB peripheral capability and apparently its VRM’s are very very stable, perhaps I’ll stick with it for a bit and see how it goes.

I ordered my AMD 5950X CPU on launch day, was ready and logged in on several sites, but all were in meltdown, crazy, just like the Nvidia RTX 3xxx launch :)

I just need the CPU now to finish this build … I’m sure it will be this week or soon, very high in queue now :)

Enjoy Tom, great looking new rig you have there.

    1. Hi Colin,
I thought about AMD too. I used AMD graphics card before and it worked nicely. Just need a bit more effort to tune it since there weren’t much information about it.
Regarding AMD CPU, the new ones sound amazing and they might be good too. I go with the Intel since I know I don’t have much time these days to make it better. So Intel is my solution to save me from trouble.
You should be ok since you are quite knowledge in this area.
Hope you get the CPU soon and good luck on your new rig.
      Best
      Tom
