In my last post “Make Hong Kong More Lively”, John M. Helms in the Comment section asked if it is true that the roads in the Hong Kong City Times payware look like dirt roads. I replied yes, in many areas.
After that, I sent a note to the developer asking the same question. The developer replied: “Yes it is due to the satellite image being used from the default MSFS, they are yellowish, they are from the outdated Bing map. But our scenery includes some part of custom satellite image already, such as the central and west kowloon, more will be added in the next update.”
I guess many friends might be wondering what exactly the answer meant in his reply. So I captured a few pictures for those who are interested.
- DEFAULT — No Addon
- FREE — with the Hong Kong Freeware by FreadkyD from Flightsim.to
- PAID — with payware from SamScene3D
No doubt, the freeware, in a way, offers some scenery enhancements. But to me, I can only say that it’s better than nothing.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean to despise it at all. It’s only just because I live in Hong Kong and I know the place, and especially I have the payware.
Indeed, there are still many not so accurate objects in the payware. And there are many things I would expect to see similar to those from the FlyTampa’s Hong Kong for FSX/P3D but they are not there. And there are also glitches to be fixed. But all these wouldn’t stop me from recommending it.
The Hong Kong City Times is pretty good and it is a true enhancement to the scenery, not just to the city but to the suburbans and to many other area in the region as a whole. I dare say that it is so far the best addon for Hong Kong, including those previously developed for FSX/P3D and X-Plane.
Lastly, a bit cliche, I am by no mean having any connection with SamScene3D.–

I’ve never been in Hong Kong and can’t judge how close it’s to the real thing, but I love the SamScene rendition. It’s got so much to see and has a lot of atmosphere and is real fun to fly there.
There’s even a “lite” version of VHHH included, but this is quite basic and a good Payware VHHH would be a very welcome supplement

Frankly, I don’t think it is possible to fully replicate the buildings in Hong Kong as they are so dense and complicated.
But I showed the scenery to my families and many friends, they are all impressed by what the addon does.
