412: GTX 1080 Ti is Here

Nvidia has just announced the official release of the GTX 1080 Ti.  With a relatively gtx1080ti_resizeaffordable price, the card even has some features better than the company’s flagship Nvidia Titan X.

Although I said in last May that I would not replace my 18-months old GTX 980 Titan X for the GTX 1080, this Ti one is definitely the card I’ve been waiting for.   Aren’t you?

411: FIP Knobs Not Working Fix

I sometimes receive questions asking me “Why the knobs on one of my FIPs don’t work?   They used to be working fine.”

It is a bug in the Saitek driver.   When the SaiFlightSimX.xml builds up to a certain number (most likely over 15 from my experience), the knob command assigned to the last gauge (or the last two gauges)  becomes not functioning.

Suggested fixes are follows: Continue reading

410: Should I … X-Plane?

by Michael Basler (http://michael-basler.net)

Michael is a veteran flightsimmer, who started playing Flight Simulator 4 back in 1991.   About 2 weeks ago, while we were discussing various issues regarding compatibility of my FIP gauges in X-Plane, an idea of inviting him to write a guess piece for his impressions and thoughts on the new X-Plane 11 came to my mind suddenly.   Thanks Michael and here’s the piece.

xp11_logoAt first: No, I am not one more X-Plane evangelist trying to persuade you to “convert”.  But I don’t think it hurts to look what’s going on elsewhere.

At second: Do you think this is misplaced at FSX Times?  It’s not – as you’ll find below. Continue reading

409: Cessna Compass Updated

c172sp_cmp_r4c-onThe marker strip on the Cessna Wet Compass has been revised to better match the one in the virtual cockpit.

Users should have received update instructions via email already.  Should any user hasn’t got it in their mailbox, feel free to contact me.

408: Mooney Bravo Gauges Released

Over the last 10 months, I’ve put more time on making gauges for FIPs than flying in the virtual world, as I am excited to see them evolving from some original basic attempts into current skillful works.   A rather unexpected alternative satisfaction I never thought would have gained from flight simulation.

mooneybravo_eng1_gifsThe latest project I just finished is the Mooney Bravo, which consists of two integrated Engine gauges plus the ASI, HSI and TCR.   Some new techniques have been used in this gauge set, such as a selectable DME 1 & 2 display, and the stepping-style elevator, rudder and wing flaps indicators. 407: B737 Cockpit Building Tips

Ever wanted to build your cockpit but have not a clue where to get started?   Marcus from Marcuswald Air recently sent me his 737-800NG photos for the Cockpits section.  In addition, he has included a photo-book about the building of his cockpit.marcuswald

He said that the document didn’t have a great deal of text but thought it was best to go with photos and it was just meant to show the build in generic terms with a bit of humor.

The photo-book can be downloaded from here or by clicking the image of the book.

Thank you Marcus.

406: Saitek Driver Toggler

As mentioned in my Post 380 back in mid-September last year, I was working on a utility that would allow the toggling of the ON/OFF status of the Saitek Driver because SPAD.neXt requires the Saitek Driver to be removed (or unloaded) from the system in order to run properly.

Here it comes at last and I call the utility “SToggler” (abbr for fsx_times_saitektogglerSaitek Driver Toggler“).  Edit: The utility has been updated and renamed as FIP Driver Toggler.   It is compatible with either Saitek or Logitech FIP drivers now.

The utility was designed to serve my needs to keep both Saitek and SPAD.neXt drivers on my system and at the same time could be selectively used when either of them was called up without interfering the other.

What the utility does when executes: Continue reading

Cockpit: Ben Weaver (KBJC, USA)

Ben Weaver in Colorado recently sent me his cockpit photos as follows.   His idea of using a piece cloth to build up a temporary cockpit enclosure is brilliant and effective.   You will also find a video link that showcases his cockpit build at the end of the post.
